Potency & Concentration
All herbs contain essential oils. Essential oils are, essentially, herbal. We love herbs. We love essential oils. So, what’s the difference?
Essential oils are the life blood of plants, whether from an herb or tree, fruit or flower, fresh or dried. They are the plant’s concentrated “essence,” and by nature are many times more potent.
Depending on factors such as the particular plant, which part of the plant is being used (stems, petals, resin, etc.), the plant’s overall health, growing conditions, and the distillation method, an essential oil can be 50 or as much as 100 times more potent, i.e. therapeutic, than its herbal counterpart.
For instance, one drop of a doTerra peppermint essential oil is the estimated equivalent of 28 cups of peppermint tea! I read from one distillery that it takes 60,000 rose petals to produce 1oz of rose essential oil, or roughly 22lbs of rose petals to fill a 5ml bottle, about .03oz of oil.
Though essential oils are safe and non-toxic, you need very little per usage to experience their amazing benefits to your health, fitness, and beauty. For a little more essential oil education, check out this short clip from my online class.
